World's First Robotic Girlfriend Toys with Concepts of Companionship
On truecompanion.com customers can customize their robot girlfriends for $7,000 to $9,000, choosing their hair color, race, cup size and personality. And you can program her to talk about whatever you want. "If you like Porsches, she likes Porsches. If you like soccer, she likes soccer," Hines boasted.
Some might think a robotic girlfriend that shares all of your interests and can never bring up anything to talk about that you don’t already know (because you programmed her to bring it up) would get boring. But unlike real women with their pesky individuality and desires that might differ from yours, Hines pointed out, Roxxxy will have sex whenever you want to. What he means is that you can have sex with her while she lies motionless whenever you want to, because she’s not actually your girlfriend, she’s a doll.
The idea behind Roxxxy is that she's more than a blow-up doll, more than a sex-chat line, she’s a “TrueCompanion.” She uses voice recognition software to carry on conversations and her “skin” is kept warm by an internal circulation system so that it almost seems like she’s a real person. “They wanted to have their dolls become interactive and be their friends,” Hines said of why old-fashioned sex dolls aren’t enough for his socially challenged market. But in the end, no matter how advanced the technology, these grown men are still at home alone, playing with a doll.
Perhaps I’m being too harsh. For some men, a relationship with a living, breathing woman is not an option, or at least they feel that it’s not. No one should be denied the joy of companionship, but Roxxxy and the men who love her beg the question, what exactly is a companion? Is an anatomically correct robot that can carry on prerecorded conversation really better than masturbation? Sexually, maybe, if you're not too creeped out by her lifeless, unblinking eyes. But in terms of everything else, that's just delusion. If you can't get a real girlfriend, at least find a discussion forum where you can talk about World of Warcraft with other lonely people—don't program a robot to simulate conversation.
