Late Night Coffee

Where to go when everything’s closed
Monday, December 6th, 2010

For being the city that never sleeps, unfortunately, most coffee shops close before 9 p.m.

Sometimes getting homework done at home is just impossible. Your roommates are home and being noisy — playing music loudly and knocking on your door, wanting to hang out, or you are just too distracted by everything in your room, or can’t stay awake. That’s when the coffee shop seems like the perfect solution. It’s a quiet public environment where you can stay caffeinated and get the last few pages of that 15 page final paper finished. For being the city that never sleeps, unfortunately, most coffee shops close before 9 p.m. Here’s a few that welcome the night owls.\

Aroma

Aroma has a minimalistic decor which is useful for studying (Ashley Chervinski)

1. Aroma
Aroma is the largest espresso bar chain in Israel, with its only U.S. locations in Florida and New York City. Aroma is large, airy and has a minimalistic orange and white decor, which makes focusing on a boring reading a snap. Try the “ice aroma” for $4.15, a blended drink of coffee, cocoa powder, milk and ice that puts Starbucks to shame, or a cheese bureka for $4.90 — a Bulgarian triangular pastry filled with feta and cream cheese.
145 Greene St., Open 7 a.m. - 11 p.m. Monday - Saturday, 7 a.m. - 9 p.m. Sunday

2. The Bean
The Bean may seem a little far, but well-worth the walk once you’re there. It’s spacious (especially compared to the now-closed hallway-sized Sixth Avenue location) with comfy chairs to sink into, tables to spread your books out on, and large windows perfect for people-watching when you need a short break. At $2 a medium coffee and free Wi-Fi, your wallet will enjoy it too.
49 ½ First Ave., Open 7 a.m. - 12 a.m. Sunday - Thursday, 7 a.m. - 2 a.m. Fri. - Saturday

3. Table 12
Table 12 is probably one of the last 24-hour coffee shops left in New York. It offers classic diner food and treats, like the “Elvis shake” (chocolate, peanut butter and bananas) in addition to coffeehouse drinks, like the mocha mint latte. It’s a little pricey (a small coffee is $2.50, entrees start at $16.95), but the Wi-Fi is free. When it’s 2 a.m.,  you need to finish that final, and just can’t focus at home, Table 12 is your place.
188 Ave. A, Open 24 hours daily
