65 5th Occupiers Seek Legal Aid
Tuesday, February 16th, 2010
On February 11, the Lang Student Union discussed an anonymous proposal which requested $2,200 to cover outstanding legal fees for three Lang students who participated in last years occupation of 65 Fifth Ave.
"We must give this money, not out of charity, but out of absolute support for the dissolution of all institutions that service only the cattle carts," read the proposal. "[It is a gesture] announcing that there is no true poetic action that is separate from student's concern."
Some in LSU felt that the language used was needlessly offensive and decided not to vote on the proposal. The current draft doesn't specify what legal fees remain unpaid nor does it provide conditions to ensure funds are spent properly.
In the past, occupation supporters have held several fundraising benefit parties which occasionally lead to additional arrests.
No participants of the occupation were present, not even those whom the proposal sought to aid.
